Prevention of relapse

Talk about it

When you start having the urge to use, you can better handle the urge by telling a trusted person or a professional about it. You can call someone in recovery, support or even a close friend to discuss the issue.  Talk to them your experiences, and this will help you overcome the issue. “A problem shared is half-solved” as some would say.

Look for a distraction

When the thought of using comes to your mind, you can overcome the thought by doing something different.  Occupy yourself with something else like talking to a friend, going for a walk, playing computer games, reading, watching a movie or reading.  Sitting there with your urge and not doing anything can make the mental relapse to grow in strength

Wait for 30 minutes

Most urges do not last more than 30 minutes; some may only last for about 15 minutes. When the urge comes, therefore, you can console yourself with the thought that it will soon pass and you will regain your mental control again afterward. It may be difficult to wait for an entire 30 minutes for the urge to pass, but the duration will soon lapse, and you can regain control afterward.  Do not just wait around for 30 minutes, but occupy your mind with one or two engaging activities until the wave passes.
